What to expect with your VPN:

While connected to my VPN, the Internet doesn’t work.  Why?

Affects: Almost all PCF Users

We currently have split tunneling turned off for an added level of security.  If you are using the standard VPN PCF that comes standard with the Cisco Software, then this is the explanation.  Also by having this turned off, it helps to ensure that our patient data is more safe & secure.

A window appears asking me for a username and password.  Why?

Affects: Upper level PCF Files ONLY

The reason that you are receiving this is because your PCF allow you more network access.  In order to have the additional rights on the network, you must logon to our network with Active Directory credentials.  This provides an extra level of security to protect our patient data and our internal network.

What all can I access with my VPN?

                        Affects: N/A

If you are using the standard PCF, then only have access to Meditech and PCI Scanned Images.  While some job functions do require additional items, these individuals have been notified of what her PCF file can access.  If you are unsure, contact IT.  Be certain that you have the name of the PCF that you are connecting with.

How do I connect?

Step 1: Start the VPN Client.  The icon appears to be a ‘padlock’.

Step 2: Once that opens, you should see that MajorVPN is selected in main part of the VPN Client screen.  If it is not selected, click on it to select it.

Step 3: On the top left, you should see a picture with a right arrow that says ‘Connect’.   Go ahead and click it.

Step 4: You should see a blue status bar work it’s way across the bottom of the VPN Client screen.  It should go through the following steps:

I.                    Initializing the Connection

II.                 Negotiating Security Policy

III.               Securing Communications Channel

Step 5: Once it connects, the VPN Client will disappear.   An ‘padlock’ icon will appear in the system tray (down at the bottom, right by the clock).  If it is a ‘locked padlock’, then you are connected.  If it is an ‘open’ or ‘unlocked padlock’, then the client is not connected.

Troubleshooting Your VPN:

It will not connect. What should I do?

First:                Make sure that you are following the connection instructions under “How do I connect?”

Did this fix it?  Yes, you are finished.  No, go to ‘Second’.

Second:           Restart the computer – Then try it again.

Did this fix it?  Yes, you are finished.  No, go to ‘Second’.

Third:               Open Internet Explorer.  Are you able to connect to the Internet and browse?

If you can browse, then try the VPN Client again.

If you cannot browse, then either one of two things could be happening.

I.                    You are actually connected to the VPN.  Check the system tray (down at the bottom, right by the clock) to see if you can locate a ‘locked’ or ‘closed padlock’.  If you do not see the locked padlock, then go to II.

II.                 There is an Internet connectivity issue that needs to be addressed prior to connecting to the VPN.

Fourth:            Turn off your Cable/DSL Modem.

                        Turn off your Router/Switch.

                        Turn off your Computer.

Wait for about 1 minute and turn on the Cable/DSL Modem.

Wait about another minute and turn on the Router/Switch.

Wait another minute and turn on your computer.

Once everything comes back up, try your Internet connection again.

If it works, then try again to connect to the VPN Client.

If it fails, then you should contact your ISP (iQuest, Comcast, Insightbb, etc.) for Internet Connectivity issues.

I entered my username and password, and it won’t connect.

When entering your username and password, you will get three opportunities.  After the third attempt, it will return to the VPN Client screen.  At the bottom, it will read ‘Not Connected’.  Check your username and password again to verify that you are entering correctly.  Also, verify that the CAPS lock is not enabled.

If, after you’ve reviewed your logon information and CAPS, and you find that it still will not let you connect, then contact IT for a password reset or to give confirm your logon information.
